May 1st is the official “National Reply By Date” for high school seniors to make their final decision on which college they will attend. Some of you may still be contemplating more than one school and this can become an extremely difficult choice, even if you have done your research, visited each campus, and taken a campus tour.
According to College Admissions Expert Cristiana Quinn, there are a few things you can still do that may make your final decision a little easier.
1. Review the College’s Data
- One important piece of data is looking at the number students that return for their sophomore year. This definitely shows how content the students are. Be aware if the return rate is below 70%.
- Identify the four-year graduation rate for the college. This is important information so you know financially what you and your parents are in for if you have to go beyond four years.
- If you are thinking of pursuing an advanced degree, it is a great idea to check out the percentage of students who are going on to graduate school.
2. Know the Majors and Courses Offered
- If you know what you are going to major in, take it a step further by specifically looking into what courses are offered, what the professors’ credentials are, and if there are any internships and/or research opportunities for students.
- Be wary of just looking at the college’s course catalog. Instead, call the department you are majoring in and ask for a course list for this upcoming year and the following year.
- If you are heading to college with an undeclared major, make sure you have thoroughly researched all of the majors and minors the college offers to make sure they are on your high interest list.
3. Spend the Night or Visit the Campus Again
- If possible, it is a great idea to have an overnight visit to the campus you are seriously considering.
- If you haven’t been on campus and visited classes while in session, make this part of your visit.
- Visit the social hot spots that students talk about.
- Ask questions, talk, and ask more questions. Talk to students and even professors about any questions you have on your mind.
4. The Insider’s Guide to the Colleges
- It’s a good idea to get as much information as you can before making that final decision. The Yale Daily News publishes this book and gives insight into campus life, course rigor, the surrounding community, and professor access.
- You can also visit a bookstore and check out any other publications that have information on the colleges you are interested in.
It’s great if your decision has been made, but if not, these helpful hints can possibly guide you in making that final decision.
