Nothing seems to induce anxiety for students quite like test time. Whether you study regularly, wait until the last minute and cram, or something in between, it’s likely that you’re wondering if there is any way you can improve on your study habits. In particular, what is the best way to study, that will help you earn the highest grades possible?

Regular tests are hard enough, but as your ACT or SAT date rapidly approaches, you need this information more than ever. According to research, successful students employ the following tactics.

1. They investigate what material a test will cover, and discover the types of questions it will include. For regular tests, asking your teacher will do the trick. For the ACT or SAT, test preparation books will provide this information. Talking to a friend or tutor who has taken the test can also be helpful.

2. They start at least a few days before the test, and make a study plan. Obviously with college entrance exams, you will begin studying weeks or even months in advance.

3. They look for resources. Successful students don’t rely only upon their own smarts. They communicate with their teachers, use practice tests, or consult with tutors.

4. They practice. Students who ace exams usually spent a significant amount of time quizzing themselves.

5. They pace themselves. Cramming for hours the night before the exam can actually backfire. It’s better to study for about 45 minutes at a time, take breaks, and to stretch your studying over several days.

All of these study tips incorporate one common theme: Take charge of your own learning! The most successful students are the ones who view themselves as active participants in their education, not passive objects who simply show up at school to “be” educated by someone else.
