Those of you interested in attending a university or vocational school have a great opportunity this weekend as the 5th annual Temecula Valley College and Vocational Invitational is taking place on Saturday, September 21st from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Temecula Promenade Mall’s upper level.
Students will have the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives from over 175 universities, colleges, vocational schools, and military branches to learn about each organization and its student services and financial aid.
The fair is known as the largest of its kind in the region and is free of charge. According to Melanie Norton, spokesperson for the Temecula Valley Unified School District, the event, which began in 2009, was a direct outcome of the goals and objectives of the City of Temecula’s Youth Master Plan, which is a comprehensive strategic guide that aims to identify the needs and goals of young people.
Organizers say that this year will be the largest fair since it began and will attract universities ranging from California State schools and University of California schools to Ivy League and many vocational schools. The fair has grown each year and is expecting at least 5,000 student attendees this year.
Temecula’s Economic Development Manager, Charles Walker said, “Our goal is to get students thinking about the opportunities available to them in higher education. The more schools we can expose them to, the better.”
If you plan on attending this Saturday, you should be prepared to ask the representatives some questions. Here are a few to consider:
1. Do you have a list of majors that I can take with me and look over later?
2. What is the enrollment deadline and what are the recommendations for taking the SAT or ACT?
3. Are subject scores required or recommended?
4. Is it possible to waive my application fee?
5. Are there any scholarship secrets for your college?
6. What are the exact admissions requirements? Does your school consider activities important? How important are community service hours?
7. Is it possible for a student leader to contact me and give me a student’s perspective of the college?
If you have other specific questions that are important to you, such as class size, extracurricular activities on campus, what students do for fun, or what percentage of students who are freshman graduate in four-five years, write down the questions and be sure to ask.
The Promenade Mall is located at 40820 Winchester Road in Temecula.
