Consider These “Hot” Job Fields

As you’re weighing your options to choose a major (and even a university), several different factors will influence your decision. Obviously, you want to choose a field that you will enjoy and that brings personal fulfillment. For most people, pay is also important. And then there’s the big one: Will you be able to get a job in your chosen field after you graduate?

It’s not possible to completely predict the future, but watching current job trends can lend important insight. According to the state of California’s Employment Development Department, these job fields are considered “hot” right now, in the sense that they were projected to grow and add new positions between 2014-2024. Since this is 2018 we have already seen some of this growth, and these fields continue to look promising. If any of them align with your interests, they might be worth your consideration.

  • Web Developers – predicted to grow by 48.3 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Statisticians – predicted to grow by 45 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Software Developers – predicted to grow by 42.5 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Operations Research Analysts – predicted to grow by 42.4 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Biomedical Engineers – predicted to grow by 41.1 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Nurse Practitioners – predicted to grow by 38.9 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Interpreters and Translators – predicted to grow by 36.6 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Computer Systems Analysts – predicted to grow by 35.4 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Physician Assistants – predicted to grow by 34.3 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists – predicted to grow by 32.3 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Economists – predicted to grow by 30.4 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Computer and Information Systems Managers – predicted to grow by 30.3 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Medical Sonographers – predicted to grow by 29.4 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Health Specialties Teachers – predicted to grow by 28.4 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Postsecondary Law Teachers- predicted to grow by 28.6 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Surgeons, Obstetricians, and Gynecologists – predicted to grow by about 28 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Nurse Anesthetists – predicted to grow by 27.3 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Soil and Plant Scientists – predicted to grow by 27.3 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Physical Therapists – predicted to grow by 26.9 percent between 2014 and 2024
  • Computer Network Architects – predicted to grow by 26.1 percent between 2014 and 2024

As you can see, many of the “hot” jobs fall into the computer technology or medical fields, but there are some other options as well.
