Even though the May 1st national response date for high school seniors to notify colleges if they are attending a university has passed, students who are still not enrolled in college for the fall of 2014 still have hope.
In a recent article by Briana Boyington, she mentions that, according to the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s annual College Openings Update, more than 270 colleges and universities across the United States are still accepting applications for the fall.
The list, which was released this week, shows which colleges still have space for incoming freshmen and transfers. In addition, the update also allows students to see if a particular college has financial aid and/or housing available.
However, most if not all of these colleges are likely to only have a few spaces open, so if you find a college you are interested in, you need to apply as soon as possible.
The majority of the schools on the list still accepting applications are mainly small, private colleges, with most having a student population between 1,000-5,000 students. But, there are some larger, public universities on the list, including the University of Arizona, Montana State, and Illinois State.
The University of Arizona, one of the largest schools on the list only has a couple dozen of spots available, according to Kasey Urquidez, the associate vice president of student affairs and enrollment management and dean of admissions at the university.
So, what should you do if you are perusing through the list of colleges and find one that grabs your interest?
Since spots will most definitely fill up quickly, the faster you submit an application the better. Some of the colleges even have summer deadlines, such as the University of Arizona, which usually stops taking applications by June 1st.
Seton Hall University’s vice president of enrollment Alyssa McCloud said, “This time of year, there is a lot of need for urgency. So, we can’t wait six weeks for [the future students] to get us a recommendation form or transcript, so [the students] have to try to get everything to us quickly and preferably all at once.”
Just make sure that your application is strong, showing all of your positive attributes, and also make sure your application is accurate.
McCloud added, “Call the school in advance to ask if they have spots left and also let them know that you’re sending the application so that someone is looking out for you.” In addition, you should contact an admissions counselor to help you.
