In the past, we have written a few articles that focused on how to make sure your social media doesn’t have anything negative on it that would raise a “red flag” to college admissions officers and possibly hinder your chances of being accepted to a college or university you applied to.

However, social media, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even Google, can actually be a place where you can positively reflect who you are as a person, and thus, help your college application.

A recent article by Bradford Holmes from the College Admissions Playbook explains that it can be critical for you to construct a strong online persona that is positive.

Holmes suggests that you thoroughly comb through your social media accounts and use them to your advantage. Holmes says that Facebook, for example, is an excellent example to present yourself in a positive light.

When you go through your social media accounts, it is important to look at even the smallest details, such a using proper grammar. In addition, you can post photographs and/or videos that support what you detail in your application. This will provide visual evidence of your hobbies, extra-curricular activities, and organizations that you are involved in.

For example, if you are an artist or a musician, you can post evidence of your artwork or a video of a musical performance. And, if you are involved with the community, such as working at a homeless shelter or volunteering for your church, posting photos can definitely enhance your application.

Holmes also suggests that you use your social media to connect with the colleges and universities you are applying to. You can “friend” or “follow” professors who work in the major you are going to study.

You can also interact with the colleges of your choice through social media, which will show your interest before you actually visit the campus or have an interview.

Holmes mentions that you can even sign up for LinkedIn, which will allow you to build a network of relationships to the colleges you are interested in. This will also demonstrate to the college that you are proactive and professional.

Finally, you can post videos to YouTube or even create your own YouTube channel, which might show your athletic skills or music talent.
