When winter break arrives, most students breathe a sigh of relief. Midterms are over, big papers are submitted, and you can finally take a break from your daily grind.

Of course, if you’re not careful, it’s easy to waste your down time. You should definitely take a well-deserved break at this time, but try to resist the impulse to do absolutely nothing! You can use this time to catch up on some other tasks, and give yourself a head start on next semester.

Apply for internships. The right internship experience can help you get into college or score a terrific job after graduation. Start searching and applying for positions now, to find the best fit for summer break.

Catch up with friends and family. Relationships can become distant or strained when we’re all too busy to connect. Make sure to engage in some social kind (preferably the real kind, rather than social media).

Review next semester’s schedule. What worked for you this semester? What didn’t work? Do you want to pick up any new extracurricular activities or sign up for an elective?

Earn extra money. You might have a chance to score some side gigs, like wrapping gifts, helping to put up and take down holiday lights, or babysitting the neighbor’s kids.

Bake some holiday cookies, or make homemade candy. Yes, it’s old fashioned, but you can make delicious, thoughtful gifts for your loved ones without dropping a ton of cash. Plus, it’s a great way to spend time with your parents or siblings.

Read (for fun). Throughout the semester, required readings make up a large part of your daily chores. But you probably miss reading things you chose for yourself… Now is the time to catch up!

Take a hike (or get some other form of exercise). Yes, it’s tempting to sleep all day and spend your nights with the Xbox, but too much lounging time will disrupt your regular schedule. Exercise is good for both physical and mental health.
